  • Brown Pool Water Caused By Iron And How To Remove It

If you are reading this you probably already have had the unpleasant experience of having an unsightly and uninviting brown tint to your pool water caused by iron. Although harmless, not many folks are itching to jump in. If they do, they risk jumping on top of someone. In addition, loosing sight of a child in the pool can be quite distressing.

Iron itself, when dissolved in water, has no color and is very difficult to filter out. High levels are found in well water across the U.S. as well as in some municipal water supplies.Once a pool is filled and chlorine is added or the water gets aerated, the iron will rapidly oxidize and create an "iced tea" - brown shade to the pool water or even turn it to an opaque burnt orange. This oxidized iron, or rust, will then settle to the bottom of the pool. If you do not have a filter capable of removing it, vacuuming will be futile as the iron oxide will simply return to the pool and settle yet again.

Traditionally, to deal with this dilemma, either a filtration system is required or a chemical agent would be added to other cause the iron to clump together or essentially "hide" the iron. Either solution can require multiple, expensive applications throughout the pool season.  Better filtration systems can be very expensive and garden hose connected disposable filters used when filling the pool can clog and only provide a frustratingly slow flow of water. We developed our Aquabag-FE filter to take care of the brown water problem in an economical fashion without the use of expensive chemicals.

To clear it up your pool, simply connect one of our filters to your pool filter water return. Then let the pool clear. if you have sediment, you may need to manually vacuum or stir it up to allow the filter to take it in. This is normally only required in extreme cases.
